I’ve heard, many, many times, that writers want (expect, hope for) how to find an agent information to be in one place. A single book. A definitive website. THE answers. That doesn’t exist, for many reasons. First, there isn’t one one answer to any of the questions. Second, every agent will give a (slightly) different answer.
Isn’t that helpful?
After a decade plus in publishing, I have a few ideas I want to share. Reading this newsletter will not guarantee you an agent or a book deal (because lol), but it aims to help you find not just an agent, but the right one.
I believe in getting paid for writing. I want to get paid for my writing and I want my clients, and you, to get paid for yours. But, I also know that not everyone has money to spend on information. Not everyone has money to spend on food and health care. And some people want to make writing their job, so they can earn money for food and health care, and maybe even information. I couldn’t in good conscience put everything I want to say, everything I want to teach, behind a paywall. Newsletters about general how to find an agent information will be free and public.
For those of you with some money to spend, you’ll get other valuable insights from my decade plus of being a literary agent and a writer. I’ll talk about Why I Chose This, about projects I signed up. I’ll talk about How I Sold This, about projects I sold. I’ll go over some of my tried and true writing advice, gleaned from editing my clients and writing and editing my own work. I’ll even talk about my own writing progress as I try to finish my fucking novel. These extra posts will be behind the paywall, open to subscribers. I hope you find them valuable.
I aim to publish every other week, minus holidays and the last week of August when all of publishing shuts down. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. I hope it works out for everyone, including me.
n.b. Paying for this newsletter will not make it more likely that I will be your agent. I will not cross reference the subscriber list and my query inbox. You will not get points for saying “I subscribe to your newsletter!” in your query. That would be a bullshit thing for me to do, and also, the Association of Authors’ Representatives Canon of Ethics forbids it. So don’t even. It won’t work.
