HNY Kate! Love how you write about all this muck --- just wanted to add that the best advice I was ever given for how to find an agent that might work for me was to look in the acknowledgements section of books that had similar themes -- a happy writer always thanks their agent! This is how I ended up signing with mine - we'd been talking but she's old school and I couldn't find any evidence of recent work online (thanks for nothing Publishers Marketplace), then I started looking on my shelves and she was all over the place. Just a hint-hint for other readers!
Not only does it help pinpoint agents who are actively working in your niche, but it also gives a sense of their success and connection with authors. Your story about finding your agent this way is such a great example—it’s proof that sometimes the "old school" methods still work wonders! https://fnf-online.org/
This came at just the right time! I’m navigating an agent offer and trying to to right-size my expectations for the kind of relationship I think will best serve me- just raced through all these old posts for a lot of really helpful food for thought!
Congrats on your 6th blog-iversary! I wanted to say a belated thank you for the "What Happens if the Offer Comes Before the Agent" post, which, funny enough, my now-agent sent to me for reference before we were signed (long story). Anyhow, all you share is so, so helpful. Best wishes for 2025!
