Hi, new subscriber with a question and I apologize if this is the wrong means or venue for asking. I'm in the final stage of completing a 155,000 word novel (upscale fiction) for querying and submission. I intend to use a copyrighted 11 line poem in its entirety as an epigraph. Question: do I need copyright permission to include it with my manuscript for review, or only if/when the work is published? Why do I ask? Because getting permission is turning out to be expensive and time consuming and, at this point, I can't answer many of the questions asked (who's the publisher, what will be the retail price, blah, blah, blah?).
